Step-to-Step Guide to Get Paint Out of Your Carpet
1. Identify the Type
Before you start with carpet cleaning, it is important to identify the type of paint you have to deal with, as the cleaning process for every kind of paint differs. For example, water-based paint is very different from oil-based paint and cannot be cleaned using the same method. Therefore, before figuring out how to clean the paint, find out which sort of paint it is. You can check the label of the paint to find out the type.
2. Remove the Excess Paint
Use a spoon to remove extra paint from the carpet, and while doing so, be careful not to spread it even more. Use a microfibre cloth or a paper towel to blot out the excess paint gently.

3. Dealing with Acrylic Paint
- Gloves
- Knife
- Spray bottle
- Warm water
- Liquid dishwashing soap
- Paper towels/ microfibre cloth
- White vinegar / Rubbing Alcohol
Remove Access Paint: If you spilt Acrylic Paint, then the good news is it is easier to remove as compared to oil-based paints. In addition, acrylic paints tend to dry faster, so you can start by scrapping off the extra paint. Use gloves while removing excess paint, and try to remove as much as possible.
· Create Warm Water and Dishwashing Soap Solution: Mix equal parts of warm water and liquid dishwashing soap in a bowl and dip a clean cloth in it.
Note: Use a clean white cloth for carpet cleaning as any coloured cloth can leave its colour on the carpet.
· Appy Solution to the Stain: Dip a cloth into the solution and blot the stain to remove the paint. Avoid rubbing, as the stain may get deeper into the carpet.
· Spray Warm Water: Use a spray bottle with warm water to wash out soap water from the carpet. Spray warm water on the stain and blot with a dry cloth or paper towel.
· White Vinegar Solution: If the abovementioned process didn’t work, mix one distilled white vinegar with ten parts of warm water, spray the solution onto the stain, and blot it with a clean cloth. Then use a clean cloth/sponge with cold water to blot the stain.
· Rubbing Alcohol: You can also use rubbing alcohol to remove the paint stain. Soak a cloth in isopropyl alcohol and blot the stain for 15-20 minutes. Then use a dry cloth to continue clotting to soak up the remaining residues. Let it air dry after blotting.
· Repeat: If the stain is still visible, repeat the process 3-4 times.
4. Removing Oil-Based Paint

- Gloves
- Spoon/Knife
- Clean cloth/sponge
- Paint thinner
- Dishwashing liquid
- Spray bottle
- Warm water
- Rinse Out the Soap: Spray warm water to rinse out the soap and blot dry using a paper towel or clean cloth.
Apply Soap Solution: Mix 1/4 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid with 1 cup of warm water and apply it to the stain using a clean cloth or sponge. Gently blot the stain. Do not rub. - Apply Paint Thinner: Use a sponge or clean cloth to apply thinner on the paint stain. Start with the edges and be careful while applying thinner, as you might spread the stain by rubbing it. When your sponge/cloth is covered in paint, rinse it or use a new one and continue blotting until the paint is entirely removed.
- Spray Warm Water: Use a spray bottle to spray warm water on the stain and blot again with a clean cloth.
- Repeat: Repeat the process if needed.
5. Removing Water-Based Paint

- Spray Soap Solution: Mix equal parts of dishwashing soap and water and spray the solution onto the stain. Use a clean cloth to blot the stain. Water-based paints are comparatively easy to remove, so soap water can easily take it out.
- Flush out Soap: Spray warm water to wash out the soap solution from your carpet and let it air dry.
- Repeat: Repeat the process 3-4 times if needed.
